Enhancing Transportation Systems for NDOT

Enhancing Transportation Systems for NDOT

Client: Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Development (NDOT)

Industry: Urban Transportation & Mobility

Solutions: Program Management | Traffic Management | Technology Implementation

Davidson County is experiencing rapid urban growth, creating both opportunities and challenges for its transportation infrastructure. To optimize traffic flow, enhance mobility, and improve roadway efficiency, the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Development (NDOT) sought to expand its Traffic Management Center (TMC) capabilities and implement a strategic technology roadmap for the region.

As a key contributor within the Barge Design Team, Rensel Consulting has been instrumental in advancing NDOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) program. Our contributions include:

Launching Two Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) – We played a critical role in the successful launch of two new TMCs by:

  • Developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure seamless day-to-day operations.

  • Providing interim staffing support to kickstart and operationalize the centers efficiently.

  • Drafting comprehensive software contract documents to ensure seamless system integration and long-term scalability.

Developing a Long-Term Technology Strategy – We collaborated with NDOT’s Office of Information Technology Services to create a Technology Action Plan, ensuring alignment between transportation systems and smart city initiatives.

Three-Year Work Plan for Traffic Engineering – We formulated a structured work plan for NDOT’s Traffic Engineering Division, enabling a phased and strategic approach to infrastructure development, mobility improvements, and future technology deployment.

Strengthened Traffic Management Capabilities – The establishment of new TMCs has significantly improved real-time traffic monitoring and incident response across Davidson County.

Future-Ready Transportation Infrastructure – NDOT now operates with a scalable, technology-driven framework that supports data-driven decision-making and multimodal transportation solutions.

Optimized Resource Allocation & Strategic Growth – The three-year work plan provides NDOT with a clear roadmap for system enhancements, technology upgrades, and infrastructure expansion, ensuring sustainable urban development.

Through program management, technology strategy, and hands-on implementation, Rensel Consulting continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of Nashville’s transportation network. As NDOT expands its reach, our expertise ensures that Davidson County remains at the forefront of intelligent mobility, safety, and operational efficiency in one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.

"Davidson County is among the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.  This unprecedented growth has provided the opportunity for the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Development (NDOT) to expand capabilities and improve the overall transportation system in the region.  Rensel Consulting, working as part of the Barge Design team, continues to support the transportation systems management and operations (TSMO) program development.  Rensel supported the launch of two traffic management centers (TMCs) by writing initial standard operating procedures (SOPs), providing interim staffing to launch the TMC, and developing software contract documents.  Program management services have included development of a technology action plan in conjunction with the office of information technology services and a three year work plan for the traffic engineering division."
